It’s not very often owning a classic Volkswagen saves you money, but last summer we managed to blag some free tickets to Carfest. In return we had to put Baloo on display in the Oktoberfest area, right next to the German beer lodge, well who am I to argue!
The weekend was awesome, I’ve wanted to go to Carfest for years, and it wasn’t a disappointment. I’ve always been quite fond of Chris Evans, after going to some of the Radio 1 Roadshows back in the day, and support the charities he champions.
So we were finally able to take the kids to their first proper gig, with huge names like Paloma Faith, Texas, The Proclaimers, Jools Holland, Reef, Richard Ashcroft, James Bay, Clean Bandit, Sister Bliss and the legendary Status Quo. How’s that for a first gig!
The weather, well it was changeable to say the least! We were very glad to have Graysie to sleep in, we were warm and cosy with her amazing factory heater. And Baloo made for the perfect base in the daytime, right in the heart of the festival.
Our home for the weekend, Graysie was a welcome sight after getting soaked watching the bands.
There were so many cool cars on display, we especially liked the Vintage area.
The kids loved watching the cars race around the track, especially Ed China in his mobile bed!
My favourite picture from the weekend, a brand new T6 camper getting a jump start from an old bay window, priceless!
Zoe & Matt’s Wedding – 18th August 2018
I was absolutely stoked to be able to take my little sister Zoe to her wedding with Matt Leech in Baloo. The split screen camper has been part of the family for 20 years now, so it was great that it played a part in the day. Together with my good friend Peter Keebs and his beautiful early Bay Window camper we took care of the wedding transport.
It was a really busy day, as I also played a guitar set with my acoustic duo Versonar (www.versonar.com) with fellow musician Matt Williams, followed by a DJ set with the marvellous (Tall) Paul Burgess and my nine year old son Leon. We kept everybody dancing until the early hours, so the music certainly seemed to go down well.
As a little surprise for the happy couple I had the Go Pro recording a video of the journey, so they had a little keepsake to remember the day. I’m so glad I did, as the look on Matt’s face when the Champagne cork popped and nearly went through the roof was a picture!
The day was amazing from start to finish, and it was a pleasure being part of it. We wish Zoe and Matt Leech many happy years together.
Classics at the Clubhouse – Top 10 Award – 1st July 2018
We had a fantastic day at Classics at the Clubhouse back in July, at the beautiful venue of Sandford Springs Hotel & Golf Club. This is a new show run by PJ Gibbons, who also had his amazing patina split window beetle on display.
We were parked up with the guys from Dub Addicts VW Club in Guildford, who between them have some awesome classic Volkswagens. Baloo was mixing with the most expensive car marques including Lotus, Porsche, Jaguar and Ferrari, so we were delighted to get a top 10 award.
See if you can spot Baloo on the video at www.classicsattheclubhouse.com
See you there again this year on Sunday 30th June 2019
Stonor Park VW Show 2018
The sun shone for the organisers of this years Stonor Park VW Show, and what a great job they did too. The show was vastly improved this year, with the addition of kids entertainment and live music, which we’ve always felt was lacking in the past. Here’s a few photos of our day, with Baloo looking perfectly at home in the Split Screen Van Club line-up.
Becky & Andy’s Wedding
We had a fantastic day helping Becky & Andy celebrate their wedding in style. The sun shone all day and Baloo enjoyed the attention whilst ferrying the wedding party to and from the ceremony.
Our complimentary Champagne seemed to go down a treat!
The ceremony was in Andover, with the wedding reception at the quaint Goodworth Clatford Village Hall. The stunning venue has lovely gardens that back onto the River Anton. Baloo took centre stage in the sunshine to welcome the reception guests.
We have a convoy!
Although Baloo has never let us down, we don’t like to take any chances, so we even took Graysie as a support vehicle, just in-case! We stopped at The Longbridge Mill on the way home for a well deserved drink and dinner, which topped off the day nicely.
Congratulations Becky & Andy from Inspire Camper Hire
If you are planning a wedding or a corporate event we’d love to help, so please get in-touch today.
So did you spot the difference?
We’ve been incredibly busy over the last few months servicing and making improvements to Baloo, to make sure he’s totally ready for this years wedding season.
We decided it was about time he had some new shoes, so we’ve treated him to some fresh new stock wheels. We feel these are much more in-keeping with the wedding theme, and are loving the new look. To compliment his new wheels we’ve also fitted a shiny new front bumper to brighten his smile!
Our customers safety is obviously our main priority. So along with a full set of new tyres, he’s now running new rear shocks, upgraded dual circuit brakes and we’ve also fitted a fire suppression system, just in-case the worst was to happen.
Bus Boot Camp at Type 2 Detectives
We take vehicle maintenance seriously at Inspire Camper hire, so recently attended an aircooled maintenance course at Type 2 Detectives. For a classic aircooled fanatic like myself, their headquarters are Volkswagen heaven!
It was a very early start, but after the 2 hour trip we were greeted with sunshine, a very welcome bacon butty and a lovely cuppa tea.
Our first treat was a tour of the facilities, with the chance to drool over some of the finest aircooled classic cars in their workshops. Some of the cars belonged to customers, and some were for sale.
Then it was down to business, with an introduction to the Volkswagen flat four engine from Paul Medhurst, with the aid of a demonstration engine that had cutouts to show the internal workings.
This was followed by an explanation of vehicle wiring, using circuit diagrams and electric test probes. To start with the wiring diagrams looked very daunting, but Paul explained them in a way that was easy to understand, making them seem much less complicated.
We were then shown various components that had been found on customer’s cars, that had either failed or were in a dangerous condition. This highlighted how important good thorough maintenance is, especially when you’re responsible for your customers safety.
From vehicle electrics we moved nicely onto setting up points gaps with company owner Mark Fulton, and then had the chance to get our hands dirty adjusting tappets. Volkswagen guru Andy then demonstrated the difference between the various types of Volkswagen engines, and showed us how to adjust the alternator belt tension.
Finally we were shown around customer’s cars, with common mechanical breakdown issues highlighted, and explanations on how to repair any problems to keep your vehicle moving. Conveniently Type 2 Detectives put together a handy box of common spares that should help in any roadside breakdown.
In summary I have to say the day was awesome. Type 2 Detectives certainly know their stuff, and I’d thoroughly recommend their Bus Boot Camps to anyone that’s into classic aircooled Volkswagens. Vehicle maintenance can at first seem very daunting, but everything was explained in such a way that it was easy to understand, giving confidence to tackle any mechanical issues.
